Neuroinclusive Home Design

Hello
Meet Bonnie. She's a lot (in the best way). A designer, scientist, artist, entrepreneur, and mom.
Read the story
The Beginning
As far back as she could hold a crayon, Bonnie was drawing. Throughout her life, she cycled through 289 hobbies. Each one dived into with full enthusiasm, then quietly tucked away and forgotten. Except for two: Art and Science.
The Path
Curious and passionate about learning, Bonnie earned her PhD in bioengineering. Spending years looking at cells under the microscope. Investigating what protein molecules are up to in our body. She also took courses in interior design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Because science, engineering, and design are all really doing the same thing - identifying a problem, experimenting, and finding a solution.
The Plot Twist
Her kid was struggling. Teachers were flagging things. Bonnie started reading and learning about ADHD. The more she learned, the more she saw herself in it. Both diagnosed. Her kid - and herself, at a much older age.
Looking Back
It explained a lot. Spacing out in classes. Reading assignments in reverse order. Misplaced keys. Half-finished projects. Drawn towards new experiences and novelty. And hyperfocus on everything she loved. It was driven by a creative, deeply curious brain that needed the right conditions to function its best.
The Dynamic
Bonnie lives with a loving husband who doesn't have ADHD. And if you know what that's like - you know it can be genuinely hard. What feels freeing to one person feels like chaos to another. A home has to work for everyone in it.
The Usual Tools
Medication. Therapy. Eating the rainbow. Early bedtime. Oh - and don't forget to check the snack label for Red 40. All valid. All part of the picture. But something was still missing.
The Ah-ha Moment
Bonnie redecorated her own home office. Tranquil green walls. Art she loved. Soft lighting. Sensory-friendly decor. A visible clock. She noticed she could focus better. And her son started wandering in - settling onto the couch to read in the evenings. The "environment" had been the overlooked piece all along!
The Science
It's in our DNA - and DNA is a double helix - that looks like a spiral staircase. Every living thing is genetically wired for certain conditions to truly thrive. A dolphin feels its best in the vast ocean. A tree frog thrives in the Amazon forest. We are surrounded by sensory signals every moment of every day. Light, texture, sound, color, flow. All of it traveling straight through the nervous system - telling the brain how we feel and how to react and behave. For neurodivergent individuals - who are highly sensitive to the environment, that sensitivity isn't a flaw. It's a superpower. The same wiring behind the lost keys and missed appointments is behind the creativity, the drive, the empathy, and the ability to make connections nobody else sees.
The World Is Catching Up
Less stigma. More awareness. More understanding. But schools, offices, and public spaces still have a long way to go to become neuroinclusive. We can't always control those. However, we can control - and engineer - our homes. Every room should serve its function and support the people in it. Spaces should flow with how you actually live: your routines, your rhythms, your needs.
The Mission
Bonnie founded Helix & Habitat, LLC to combine neuroscience and home design. Helping people take a closer look at their environment - identify pain points and find out what your HABITAT is doing for you - and what is not. The goal is to assess how your home makes your feel, work together to find solutions - through designing a habitat that supports you and your family.
The Approach
A mindfully designed home is not just aesthetically pleasing. Every room and space could be designed to make you feel and be your best. A work zone that finally helps you focus. A sanctuary where your nervous system exhales. A neuroinclusive habitat that supports everyone under the roof - the parents, the kids, the chaos, all of it.
The Process
Bonnie works with clients the way a scientist runs an experiment - curious, observant, responsive. No one-size-fits-all answers. The goal is to get you started, work together, find what works, and building a habitat where you can thrive.
One habitat at a time. One room at a time.
Ready to work with Bonnie? Your home should work as hard as you do. Let's build one that does.
